A fantastic continuation of the Starfire Universe, this novel covers the first part of the battle with a new race--the Bugs. The Bugs don't negotiate, don't interact, all they want to do is eat--and their favorite food is of course those very races. The story picks up pretty much where the last book left off, a few decades later as the Empire has exceeded to expand and grow. Technology has continued to grow, new ships have been developed and new worlds settled. Then suddenly the Bugs are discovered, and the forces of the Empire are set back by the sheer *number* of Bug ships that overwhelm. The book turns into a series of fighting retreats as the Human and allied forces rally their forces and try to bring enough ships to the battle to stop the Bugs completely. It's nail biting time the whole way, there are the inevitable losses and wins, but overlaying all of it is the knowledge that the Bugs will destroy them completely--EAT them completely--if the Empire fails.
I like all of these books but honestly this is the best of them IMO. If you like hard and action packed science fiction, you won't be disappointed. Get this one. Better yet, get the earlier books in the series.

Humanity and its allies face a deadly enemy. That enemy is one so different that even communication is impossible with them. Only a few things are really known. They look like giant spiders. They attack without warning. They are very powerful. They eat most of their victims. The rest they raise as livestock for future consumption.
The naval commanders charged with protecting humanity, and later the rest of the alliance, face terrible choices with frightening consequences. They can't save everybody. That means that the ones who are not saved are going to be eaten. They realize that throwing themselves into battle anyway just increases the odds that all of the allies will lose. Before they can fight the big battle, they must fight rearguard actions and marshal their forces. Whatever they do, people are going to die, people are going to be eaten and the nightmares will come. This book and its sequel do the best job I have ever encountered of pointing out the pain that can come with major commands.
Its not a fun read but it is a good one. Its also a cliffhanger.
This is the best military Sci-Fi I have ever read. And after you enjoy this novel which does not resolve a war that treatens all humanity, you can read the sequel, "The Shiva Option", which you might enjoy even more. Humans and 3 other races are allies, when a new race, the Bugs, attack without warning at first one planet and then another hundreds of light years away. The Bugs never communicate. And when the Bugs capture a planet, they kill all the inhabitants. Or worse.
Interstellar flight is only possible through warp points. Some warp points between two star systems are "open", that is, detectable from around either star. But others are "closed", that is, detectable from only one star. If a fleet in one star system advances to a second system, it can be ambushed by an enemy fleet entering the first system to cut off its retreat.
Battles between fleets involve battleships, cruisers, carriers, fighters, missiles, and stationary space fortresses. The Bugs are willing to sacrifice any number of ships to defeat an Allied fleet. And the Allies often have to use suicidal rear guard actions to give time for civilian evacuations or for a fleet to escape. But after a while, the Allies learn to cooperate better and begin winning some battles and retaking some captured planets.
<Spoiler Alert> Plot elements may be discussed. I jumped into this book without having read any of the previous books in the series. "In Death Ground", and the sequel "Shiva Option", can be read as a two book stand alone series; but if done so, there is a bit of confusion for a while until the various species and factions in the universe sort themselves out in your mind. There is also a barrage of names at the beginning which eventually get settled in. Despite this, I found this book an excellent and entertaining read. Having just finished Jack Campbell's excellent "Lost Fleet" series, I was eager for more naval space battles. This book is written in the greatest of scale, spanning multiple solar sytems and heavily relying upon the ubiquitous warp drive of SciFi lore. Nonetheless, the book is a great example of what happens when a peaceful people encounter a voracious foe that wants only to destroy and consume. Sometimes you've just got to fight. And fight they do - the scale of destruction and tons of damage in each chapter are mind-numbing. And the deaths are uncountable. Do not get attached to any character, as they may not survive to see the next chapter. The space naval battles are epic, but lack the nuanced manuevers found in Campbell's "Lost Fleet" books. The space battles here are masses of ships slugging it out, with technology giving one side or the other a temporary edge. The good guys are an Alliance of humans and some of their old non-human enemies from previous books. The Alliance is on the ropes for the majority of the book, literally fighting for their existence. The enemy is an arachnid race, and carnivorous. One quibble with the plot development is that there is very little up-close-and-personal contact with the "bugs" as they are called. Only in a couple of chapters is there anything resembling a ground war. The vast majority of the book is devoted to epic space battles, heroic sacrifices, and endless death and destruction. Humanity and its allies are definitely in a desperate fight to survive, and the outcome is in doubt. I am eager to begin the sequel, "The Shiva Option". I strongly recommend this book.
