Life was never dull for seven year old Louis Mueces despite growing up in a poverty stricken household in the Dominican Republic. His life was simply perfect as he had lots of wonderful friends, great parents that adored him and the latest Master of The Universe action figure. Unfortunately, due to the financial struggles of his family, his life is about to embark on a life altering event as they resolve to move to his expatriate Nana’s home in order to live rent free. The impeding situation leaves him devastated as all he could think is the established life he will be leaving behind. Consequently, his loving mother gives him a diary to help him cope by means of allowing him to express his feelings with an unbiased confidant. He is disinclined to accept it at first, but eventually starts using it, and in it he records the audacious vicissitudes and the turmoil that occur during the next seven years of his life. Unbeknown to him said adventures ultimately will shape and determine the unprecedented and surprising outcome of his future.

I started browsing randomly for a fresh and unusual coming of age story and came upon this book. Since many of the current books on the genre seemed to be recycled Tom Sawyer's wannabes or clichés movie stories I decided to give this book a shot and found myself quite pleased that I did. Bearing I am a woman it was a little different for me to relate to it at first, but after reading the book for about fifteen minutes I found myself fully interested in the stories and how they started to come together to bring the book to its dramatic saddening, touching, yet necessary conclusion. The book in essence (without giving the ending away) is the story of a young boy growing into adolescence through the view of his diary. The setting is in a foreign country called the Dominican Republic. I cried, laughed and fell in love as I engrossed myself in the feelings Louis was experiencing while dealing with his parents, his friends, the girl next door , his school and other situations we all dealt with during our childhood and early adolescence. I must warn though that while the story narrates his life from ages 7 to 14, many parts of the book are not for young kids as they involved instances of domestic violence and some non direct sexual innuendo references which are quite common for a boy entering his teens. At times the conversations ran a little long but otherwise my expectations were not disappointed. Overall 4.5 out of 5 starsProduct details
