The author writes well, but the underlying story just wasn’t as interesting as some of her other stories.Agatha is a 35 year old spinster who sews and makes hats. She was injured as a child and has a limp. Gandy’s wife and daughter were killed at the end of the Civil War. He has been wandering since, and recently opened a bar with gambling and dancing girls.
Agatha works to help pass laws to prohibit alcohol in Kansas in 1880.

Sweet, tender and smart. Spencer doesn’t disappoint. One of my favorites that she has written. Worth reading over and over again.
The Hero was sleeping with another woman until 3/4 of the book. There is no sparks between the H and the h. The second romance that happens in the book got me more interested than the main one.
I bought this book when it first came out in paperback years ago, then bought a 2nd copy about 3 years ago because the first was falling apart I had read it so much (at minimum once a year) and now I have the e-book edition. The characters are old friends and I visit them often.
Wonderful story about trust, friends, love and creating a "family of the heart." I've re-read it many times, recommended it and given gifts copies of this book MANY many times.
Read this! You will not regret it, I promise.
Loved this book in paperback form and was happy to see it as an ebook. It's connection to Hummingbird towards the end was a nice surprise. I hope there is a chance that Hummingbird will finally make it to an ebook. I know that tastes change, but I enjoy historical romances and will b always go towards them.
I truly wish L. Spencer would write again! I find her books to be truly romantic NOT just gratuitous sex. Her characters are brought out and you get a visual from main to minor. I just fell in love with Willy and his antics. I wanted to smack Willy's dad for taking away Willy's new clothes and for being so mean to him. The storyline didn't drag because Gussie & Scottie had to have time to develop their relationship. I loved how author showed how we can disagree with people about issues and yet respect them as people. It is sad though what alcohol can do to families......You would think after all this time we would learn from past. GREAT AUTHOR !! GREAT STORY !!!!
Overall, this novel is wonderful. It is well-written, the characters are believable, the plot is entertaining, and some parts brought me to tears. There are two parts, however, that really needed some editing help. In the first part the heroine is being terrorized by someone who wants her to stop her work as a temperance worker. He leaves threatening notes, breaks into her apartment and trashes it, then breaks in again, and sexually assaults the heroine with a knife. When he is caught attempting to kill her, the novel just mearly states that the sheriff took him off to jail. There is no follow-up after this- no mention of a trial,or anything else resulting in a very loose end with no closure.
In the second part of the novel, the hero discovers that the ghost of his dead daughter, Justine is haunting the plantation where she and her mother died. Although the hero's adopted son can see and talk with Justine the hero never even thinks to try to comunicate with her himself leaving the ghost aspect of this novel very weak with huge gaping holes. The character of Justine quite frankly added an awkward "paranormal" aspect that was extremely out of place. In my opinion the ghost of Justine should have been edited out entirely.
I loved this story! This was about the fourth time I read this book, and it was even better than I remembered.
I loved how prissy Gussie was at first. As she came to know Scott and others who worked at his saloon, she found she liked them and that they were not bad people. In fact, she found things about them that she really liked. They liked her, too. She found when they were around, they felt like family and she wasn't lonely any more.
It's such a nice, feel-good story. I already had the book in hardcover, but I wanted it on , too, so I would have it handy wherever I went.
