I heard about this book through a local political newspaper columnist. And because I live in this area and know of some of the characters, I rushed to buy this book. I loved it. I enjoy the way Mr Temple writes. I could not put the book down, I stayed up all night reading. I closed the book, only to read it again the next week. (to make sure I didn't miss anything) lol
It rang so true about the political system. The emotions I felt while reading this book, ran the entire gauntlet. Anger, sorrow, pain, excitement, disappointment, hope & satisfaction. I can't wait for his next books.

I struggled to find a hero in this book. I fully realize that all people have their struggle to do the right thing and please God. But every time I thought I had found a good guy or a good woman who was fighting the corruption, they were so very flawed that I found it difficult to even pull for them to succeed. The only good person in the book was his wife, who was largely dismissed and irrelevant in his life. Although the main character saw himself as a good person, he fell into the pit with all the others.
I felt like 1/3 of the many characters mentioned were referring back to the previous book (which I did not read) and 1/3 of the names might have been setting up characters for the next book in the series.
As a stand alone book, this was quite dark and depressing. Almost every person is corrupt...ranging from just corruption to demonic possession and/or addicted to drugs. The politicians are corrupt, the school system is corrupt, the police are corrupt, business is corrupt. The redemption came so late in the book that I did not feel much relief from all the darkness. I really love spiritual warfare topics and books like This Present Darkness, but this book did not give me enough balance in the good vs. evil battle.
Merle Temple has exceeded expectations! A Rented World is so gripping you won't be able to put it down. Merle not only deals with corruption in the political world but his own personal heartache in the loss of his precious wife, Susan. I can't wait for him to finish The Redeemed! Merle Temple has an ability to use words that provide a surround sound 3D experience for the reader! The story line deals with the hard issues while walking with people we want to know and people we want to forget. A great reminder of God's love and grace.
Met this author at a book signing in Destin, FL.. He tells a very interesting story!! Explains how the books came to fruition!! Enjoyed the 1st 2 & the last, Deputy, which goes back to the beginning before Ghostly!!!
A well written book, he expresses himself so very well. Every sentence has meaning and some of the meanings will slip up on you. You can tell the author is well read by the many quotes of well known writers and some other quotes by unknown (to me) writers also full of meaning. Once I got into the story a little way, I could not put it down, just had to finish it. And I love how he intertwines his Christian faith and brings others to choose a relationship with the Trinity. Will be excited to read the third book in this series.
There is an America behind the Sousa marches and the Stars and Stripes and Merle Temple takes us there. Though the writer's style makes you read, read, read, the characters he develops makes you savor each page slowly. Temple has a unique ability to create a fast moving real story but give it enough dept and texture for a truly enjoyable experience. The ending was a logical but unforseen conclusion that has one wanting the next chapter.
A Rented World so closely reflects politics today that it was, for me, an overwhelming read during an election season. This is a good thing, as what author would not be proud to write with such impact.. I gave author Merle Temple's first book, A Ghostly Shade of Pale, 5 stars. This book, written by a more experienced hand ( it is the 2nd of 3 in a series), should have a 6 stars. As I can't give it a 6, Mr. Temple will have to settle for and aggregate of 2 fives! I am looking forward to completing the trilogy.
