Chris....another new world to play in...yes!! Ok..I'm a fan of Chris Nuttall (but I do leave him honest reviews).

This series is like a knock off of Harry Potter (but in a good way). The main character even uses Harry Potter references and names in the story. It has it's version of Hogwarts, Honeymead, and the real world. It has a female hero. It again has that "Muggle discovers she has magic" story to it...but...Chris puts his own spin on it. The whole kidnapping by Shadye (Necromancer) and her being saved by a good wizard....very believable. The whole "Child of Destiny" as a gag line (Her mothers name was Destiny) is funny...like a running Monty Python joke. "ONLY THE CHILD OF DESTINY MAY USE THIS SWORD"..and she can....I know it doesn't seem funny but you have to read the series.

Really enjoyed this one. I've not read many by Christopher Nuttall but I liked the earlier books. This one may have hooked me for a LOT more of his writing. Think Harry Potter, but starts as a 16 year old, but starting as a 1st year student, and starts getting dark in this book right quick. I took quite a bit of time to get to like the main character but like her more now because of that.

Emily gets flipped over from our universe to a different universe in about the first 3 pages and then its a lot of what the heck after that. The fun part of it is you can emphasize with her very quickly for the oddities as time goes on. And there are more than a few good Harry Potter jokes and references as well as Dr. Who. Which makes it even more interesting it its own way as Nuttall isn't trying to reinvent these huge bodies of other work to explain stuff as it goes on. Just a "Wow this place is bigger'n and more complex than the Tardis!" I'm not a Dr. Who fan but I know plenty and it made a lot of sense to me.

I've read all the Potter books long ago and the movies as well, so it does make it more immersive in its own way as well. There are quite a few comparisons that will come to mind between the two, thats normal. Whats more fun is that the main character is the one doing them as well. It doesn't break 4th wall but I certainly enjoyed the parts like that.
I've read a bunch of Mr. Nuttall's books, but this is by far my favorite (2nd is Royal Sorceress - read that if you haven't).

3 things really stand out in this novel the magic system, the female lead, world building

I love the way that the magic system is developed in this book. It is very logical (barring alchemy), the main character is good at understanding it, and it is not so complex or so far out of reality that the reader cannot understand.

The female lead takes some time to realize that she has power, but there is no whining or internal drama when she does. THANK GOD. It always pisses me off when any character tries to feel guilty about having power. I don't know why, but most authors seem to think that having the power to choose is something to be guilty over, not the consequences of choosing. This is not the case. I prefer chaotic good characters and the female lead has a bit of this going on. (I also don't understand why a character would want to stay ignorant. Main character likes to learn)

Finally, the world building in this book is well done for an introductory novel. There are some hints, and brief descriptions of the surrounding world, but Mr. Nuttall leaves the majority of those descriptions for when those locations become relevant to the story.

A definite recommendation to read this book.
I tend to like books that have a lot of detail. However, this book made me feel like it was written by somebody that likes to ramble and go on and on and on about stuff. The problem is Emily talks too much to herself. It's weird how the author did it. There will be something going on in the book and someone's talking. Then there 7 paragraphs of Emily figuring stuff out in her head and coming to a conclusion as to what she should do. Or she has ideas that she wants to work out later. She has whole conversations in her head. Then the conversation that she is having with someone else starts up again. It makes for too much of a disconnect in the story. Don't let that stop you from reading the book! The story is really good! The second book the author gets better at writing the third book he no longer has this issue and I would give those books four to five stars. I am on the 4th book now just get past the first book. It's not horrible it's just slightly annoying. Again don't give up on the series you can see the author's maturity with each book that he writes
Whilst I found the book engaging enough to read and complete, the author's writing tone and style were jarring and off-putting. He seemed to waiver between telling a story and critiquing the cliches and tropes of literature. Although the main character is a child of our world and that serves in part to explain her MANY pop culture or literary references, it made it difficult to accept that she is in a real alternate world experiencing real things. That combined with her nonchalant acceptance of the reality of animated skeletons, dragons, and magic in general left me as a reader struggling to believe she was a real person. The irony is that the author points out so many cliches that are typical to writing that I couldn't help but be frustrated as I encountered more and more of the same in his own book.

It wasn't all bad though, I wanted to know what would happen the whole way through. I wasn't surprised by anything but neither was I bored. I found myself liking the concept of introducing the modern world to a magical but non-technological culture. I probably will not continue reading this series, but it is a decent enough pastime.
