The main character is supposed to be almost done with her doctoral program (a little research would have shown that most of her course work would be done) and hired to be a live in therapist for a bipolar man.

Actual practitioners will be banging their heads against their desks as she does things no psychologist would ever do. Caught kissing her patient, she assures her boss that the patient was the aggressor (because that makes it OK) and caught in his room in the night, she responds with the ubiquitous "nothing happened!" And this was my favorite- she found a book about bipolar in the library and started reading it, and found it sooooo interesting because she didn't research it at all before starting treatment on the client!

But the real treat in this book is trying to figure out what a real person, one with a backbone, would have done given the situations described. The older brother starts the story so unbelievably unkind that no real person would have stayed to work for him. Then in the middle of the book, he makes a sudden turn around to hot and bothered and super nice, for no apparent reason. Then she loves him, but he might be a murderer. The final scene is so unbelievable I actually cracked up laughing.

It is entertaining and doesn't have too many typos. But really, it is mediocre romance and less than mediocre mystery. I don't think this author did even cursory research on what a psychology doctoral program is about or how one would go about such a job.

Lady in the Mist Gothic Mystery eBook Alicia Dean Reviews

I enjoyed this book from the get go. Loved the supposed mentally imbalanced younger brother/older responsible brother storyline and the eerie elements of mystery. Author has nice scene setting abilities for reader visualization. Nice dialogue also. Highly recommend.
Quick read. Story didn't drag at any point. I could picture the scenery well from the descriptions in the book. Didn't guess the ending at all. Well written.
This short story has characters that are fun, well written and a story that flows. The only bad part about this book... is that it is a novella and not a full story. I enjoyed the mystery and characters so that when the ending came up, I was not ready for it. If you like mystery style romances, this is worth the read.. just remember it is a very short get away, and the ending just pops up, and when it stats to end, it seems like a couple of paragraphs, and your done.
If you miss Victoria Holt, Phyllis Whitney and Daphne DuMaurier, you're in for a treat. Alicia Dean, writing as Winter Frost, brings the atmosphere that makes Gothic mysteries so enjoyable, a "castle" by the sea, a brooding hero and a heroine who's compelled to uncover a secret. You hold your breath, knowing something bad is going to happen. A well-developed, thoroughly enjoyable novella.
This contemporary Gothic romance by Winter Frost (aka Alicia Dean) was a fun read. I remember now why I enjoyed reading Mary Stewart so much as I was growing up. The only quibble I have with this book is that it was a little short and it wrapped up a bit too neatly because it "was" short. Otherwise, this was an enjoyable read. The characters fit the genre, the secondary characters could have been a bit quirkier, but all in all, this was an interesting way to spend a cold afternoon reading--and it makes me wish there'd be a resurgence in Gothic romances.
I don’t like “Gothic” books, but I really enjoyed this book. The mystery of the story is the “Gothic” part of it. The parts when Lily suspects Clinton of harming Drew’s girlfriend really had me going. Everything was so believable, it made me want Lily to believe in it also. I was really wrapped up in this story from beginning to end. I was surprised by the ending. I didn’t expect that at all. I would recommend this book to everyone
This is a modern take on a Gothic Story. You've got an isolated island with no cell service, a mysterious rich man who lives in a huge mansion with his mentally ill brother, odd moaning sounds, power outages and a closed up a lighthouse. Enter the heroine, who needs the money and applies as therapist to the mentally ill guy. On the ferry to the job interview, she gets bad news from the local bartender who tells her creepy things about the mansion and the people who live in it. The women attracted to the family men all die weird deaths. It's all there, even the scary looking house on the book cover. Still, the story grabbed me from page one and didn't let go until the last mystery was solved and the good guy got the girl. This seemed a rather short novel, but there was a lot jammed into it, so I forgive that although it took less than two hours to read entirely. I usually like longer books. Yet, this one is worth the read. Well done.
